  Welded galvanized steel grating is a versatile structural product used extensively in industrial flooring, walkways, and drainage covers, defined by its high strength-to-weight ratio and slip-resistant surface. The material is typically manufactured from low-carbon steel or stainless steel, depending on the environmental conditions. Low-carbon steel offers excellent weldability and load-bearing capacity at a lower cost, making it suitable for general industrial applications. For corrosive environments, such as chemical plants or marine settings, stainless steel (grades 304 or 316) is specified to resist rust and chemical attack, ensuring longevity without the need for additional coatings.

  The manufacturing process involves fusing load-bearing bars (bearing bars) with cross bars using high-pressure resistance welding. This creates a grid pattern where the bearing bars carry the primary load, while the cross bars maintain the structural integrity and spacing. Common specifications include bar spacing ranging from 1/4 inch to 1-1/2 inches, with bar thicknesses from 1/8 inch to 1/2 inch. The surface treatment is a critical specification; hot-dip galvanization is the standard, where the steel is submerged in molten zinc to create a metallurgical bond that protects the steel even if the surface is scratched. This coating typically provides 30 to 50 years of corrosion protection in average environments.

  Additional features enhance the functionality and safety of the grating. Serrated surfaces, where the top of the bearing bars is notched, are often specified to increase friction and prevent slipping, especially in wet or oily conditions. The grating may also be supplied with integral lifting lugs for easy installation or specific end bands to secure the panels. Load tables are provided by manufacturers to guide engineers in selecting the correct grating size based on the expected uniform or concentrated loads. Whether used for mezzanine floors, trench covers, or stair treads, welded galvanized steel grating must meet strict international standards (such as ASTM or ISO) to ensure it can safely support dynamic and static loads while facilitating drainage and air circulation.
